There are great ways to just start playing playing Roleplaying Games (RPGs) usually involving Dungeons and Dragons (DND) or Pathfinder. Lots of places online, lots of great tutorials and pre-generated characters, stories and locations. However, maybe you want to learn without doing a lot of reading, because reading something you are not yet interested in can deter your interest. If you are more visual or just want to know what the heck this is all about or what it is all like, you may find the recent dispersion of videos to your liking.
If you are looking for a good recommendation, I have one for you.
Geek & Sundry has a Twitch.tv channel and on that channel there is a weekly show called "Critical Role" where eight (8) professional voice actors take up personally generated characters in a world of fantasy, adventure and magic, both divine and arcane. The shows are then posted on the Geek & Sundry website with a synopsis of the game.
However, if you just want a quick short game, from creation to end of first game, this particular episode is the one to watch: http://geekandsundry.com/critical-role-episode-12/
This fantastic group also encourages viewers to donate to a local reading charity, and the amount they are raising shows just how awesome this community of people can be.
Give the show a view and let me know your opinion.
Other shows there that are cool:
- Tabletop - A show hosted by Wil Wheaton where he plays board games with some friends, highlighting the pros and cons.
- Co-Optitude - Co-Optitude is all about Felicia Day and Ryon Day hilariously playing through the retro games that their parents never let them have.
- LARPs: The Series - Tabletop and RPGs too tame for you? Live Action Role Playing might be for you. Check out LARPs. Five friends meet regularly to play in a LARP, and we follow them through their daily lives to see the parallels between the game and the real world.
